When designing a machine, it’s better to mesh gears together whose numbers of teeth don’t share a common factor. In the top pair, the gears have 12 and 6 teeth each, so the red defect on the right gear grinds on the left gear in two places. Because the gears in the bottom have coprime numbers of teeth (7 & 5), the wear from the defect is spread evenly on the left gear. [more] [code]
