Industrial facilities and city centers seen from outer space

TED speaker Dan Berkenstock uses satellite images of industrial facilities to catch potential smugglers of nuclear technologies. But he found that the images available were months or years out of date, so he and his team built their own satellite, the SkySat-1. This mini-fridge-sized satellite is lighter than a phone book and uses less power than a 100-watt lightbulb, but captures impressively high resolution photography.

Above, you’re looking at:

  2. Center-Pivot Irrigation in Saudi Arabia (taken Dec 26, 2013)
  3. Dameisha Beach in Shenzhen, China (taken Jan 15, 2014)
