I would imagine it is so they can tell new stories.
I have seen a few responses where people state this has been done before, with a “whatever’ attitude. Technically this is true. Logan died most recently in Age of Ultron. Anytime something like this has happened it was a plot point of a single story. In Age of Ultron, Logan died to fix a paradox when he and himself from another point in the time stream are in the same spot. We have seen Logan die, and have to fight for his soul. Logan has “died”, but then grown himself back from a cell, or some such. Wolverine sometimes dies in the future that will never get here. Maybe he dies, but then we find out it was really a Skrull. In all these cases, Logan is up and running by the end of the story.
I am expecting this death to be different, in that the landscape of the Marvel Universe will change after he dies. New character arcs and stories will spin out of this. People will be affected by his death on numerous levels, and we will see that play out in future comics.
This is a path Logan has really never gone down. Over the last 15 or so years, he has really only become more indestructible. With the advent of “Killable”, new avenues of Logan’s character could be explored, and interpreted. It has been interesting to see this internal affect on him. Realizing he can fear for his life, and seeing in his eyes was surprising.
The Marvel Universe is a never ending myth, and creators need to continually find new, and interesting ways to present the characters to the readers. They need to stay relevant and tread new territory.
I am pretty sure it is also going to sell a bunch of comics.
