Everyone should know how to read & write in their own respective languages, even better when it’s two or more. I also believe everyone should strive to have a decent level at arithmetic. Whether you use any of the Imperial systems out there, or use the Metric one as I do.
It also wouldn’t hurt to know something about other people’s cultures, this without neglecting your own.
Last but not the least. Knowing how to fix your own tires, or how to repair stuff in your own home. While not mandatory subjects at school, but useful skills to have nonetheless.
